Nolan had his hernia appointment with the specialist in Boise yesterday. We got on a cancellation list, so they were able to get us in a week earlier.
The doctor confirmed he has an hydrocele and inguinal hernia on the left side. The hernia will require surgery. He also thinks that there many be a smaller hernia on the right side, so when they repair the left, they will scope the right from inside to see if it also needs repair before they cut on the right side. Inguinal hernias do not usually heal themselves like umbilical hernias do, so they must be repaired.
The other news is that the doctor could not feel a testicle on the left side. So it's not hiding in the hydrocele somewhere...it's simply not descended yet. They will go fishing for it and bring it down at the time of the surgery.
GACK! I'm already a basket case and the surgery is not until June 28. It is outpatient. It's scheduled for 9am at St. Lukes in Boise, so we have to stop feeding him milk at 5am..he can have pedialyte until we arrive at the hospital at 7, but nothing after that. So now I have to get him used to taking a bottle with pedialyte. The surgery itself will take at least 1.5 hours, possibly more depending on the undescended testicle and the right side having a hernia or not. He can go home that day, providing that he can keep liquids down. He'll be on infant's tylenol for pain after that.
Honestly, I think they may need to sedate *me*.
